The bottom line is that parents must protect their kids from strange people, not strangers. To tell kids, “Never talk to strangers,” promotes a rule that’s both puzzling and impractical. There are times when talking to strangers is both polite and socially appropriate. There may also be a time when talking to a stranger is lifesaving. Furthermore, there are many more good people in the world than bad people—more helpful people than harmful ones—and child abductions by noncustodial adults are rare. Given these realities, our goal must be to distinguish between strangers and strange people—and teach our children to do the same.

Maybe Christopher Robin should change his rule from “never talk to strangers” to “never talk to strange people.” On the other hand, his only companions in the Hundred-Acre Wood are Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Kanga, Owl, Roo, and Winnie the Pooh. If he rules out talking to strange people, then he won’t have many conversations, will he?
